Recording Artist & Songwriter, Bryan Finlay is a Derks Man

Our Derks Man articles are dedicated to celebrating our long-term clients, interesting men from around YEG, guys we’re inspired by, and guys that make our clothing look damn good. In this edition of #DerksMan, we interview up-and-coming recording artist & songwriter, Bryan Finlay.

Bryan Finlay first got his start by competing on 91.7 the bounce against 140 other local musicians. After handily winning the competition, Bryan caught the attention of Canadian pop/R&B artist Shawn Desman. From there, Bryan’s career has been on the up-and-up and things are looking quite bright for the talented singer / songerwriter.

If you want to take a peek at the kind of music he is putting out into the world, here’s his hit single Good Times.

Now let’s get to the interview!

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Bryan Finlay. I’m a Canadian Pop Recording Artist and Songwriter. I was born and raised in Edmonton.

When did you realize your passion was music?

I think I first realized when I was in Grade 7. I performed at the school talent show. The feeling of being in front of a crowd was like none other. I knew I had to keep doing it.

What’s a day in the life of Bryan Finlay look like?

I wake up, check all of my social media. Check emails, answer emails. Read articles on Work out. Depends on the day, but I might write with my producers or co-writers, visit some radio stations, or have general label meetings. At night I might have a rehearsal. Then I’ll go home and catch up on my fav tv shows.

Where do you look for inspiration in both your daily life and your music?

I listens to lots of music. All types of genres. From the 1940’s to Modern day. For songwriting, I can get ideas almost anywhere. I can be at the grocery store and overhear something someone says and it can spark an idea. I usually start with a title or a concept and go from there.

What advice would you give someone hoping to break into the music industry?

If you want to have your music heard, be persistent. People aren’t going to help you at first. You’re gonna have to find alternate ways of getting heard by the right people. Always be memorable!

I really love Dadeo on Whyte Ave. I love cajun cooking and they don’t disappoint! But, I also love El Cortez, just off of Whyte Ave. The vibe of that place is amazing!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
