The pant we hand over when someone wants the ease of a good jean without the denim. Sueded stretch sateen is the fabric that built this label's name beyond blue jeans: a lightweight cotton sateen woven in Italy, brushed so it has the hand of fine suede, with enough stretch to move like a knit. Coastal Pebble is a pale stone, warmer than white and easier to live with.
The house started in Los Angeles in 2000 when Adriano Goldschmied, the Italian designer the trade calls the godfather of denim, joined manufacturer Yul Ku, whose South Gate plant was the first vertically run denim operation on the West Coast. Dye work, laser finishing and water recycling happen under one roof. The Everett is their slim straight block: mid rise, easy through hip and thigh, straight to the knee, then a gentle taper to a 15 inch (38 cm) leg opening.
This is where we are steering our denim wall. Everett and Protege give a relaxed, comfortable straight leg with a modern line that is nowhere near baggy. Take your regular jean size. It runs true, and the sateen has more give than rigid denim, so do not size down. The inseam arrives unhemmed at full length; we hem in store.
Wear it where a chino would go and it reads a notch dressier. Wear it where jeans would go and it is the more comfortable pair. Tweed jacket or sweatshirt, it works with both, so we bought it for fall.
