Rent Vs Buy
Why We Made the Shift and What It Means for You
For over 40 years, we facilitated suit rentals.
When we moved to our new Mr. Derk location, we continued offering rentals through a third-party warehouse partner. Over time, we realized something important.
The rental model no longer met the standards we demand for our clients.
So we made the decision to step away from in-store rentals.
Not because rentals do not work. We simply believe there is a better option for most weddings.
Quick questions about fit, timelines, or groomsmen sizing? We can help in real time.
The Biggest Issue: Fit
Fit is everything. Rentals are built on standardized sizing, and that creates real limitations.
Where rentals struggle most
- Athletic builds with broad shoulders and smaller waists
- Men who lift and need aggressive tapering
- Heavier builds that require reshaping
- Mixed body types across a wedding party
What we do differently
With ownership, we tailor in-house. We reshape, taper, refine, and build the garment around you.
- No warehouse dependency
- No hoping your size arrives
- No event-week panic
Rental garments can only be altered within narrow tolerances. If your shoulders are too wide, your waist too small, or your seat too full, there is only so much that can be done.

The 16 Touchpoint Reality of Rentals
Most people do not realize what happens behind the scenes of a rental garment. A typical rental suit goes through roughly 16 touchpoints before and after an event.
Behind-the-scenes touchpoints
Each step adds: handling, timeline pressure, human error, and wear.
Rental systems work best in extremely high-volume warehouse environments. In today’s market, that model does not allow us to control quality the way we believe we should. If we cannot guarantee the standard, we will not offer it.

The Real Cost of Renting a Suit in Edmonton
Most wedding suit rentals today range from $200 to $399 per person, typically including a jacket, trousers, shirt, and basic accessories.
Now compare that to ownership.
Suit from $299
Shirts from $99
Ties from $49
Shoes from $109
When purchased as a wedding party, we build structured packages to keep things efficient and competitive.
Here’s the simple math: if you wear that suit one more time, you have already saved money. No second rental. No second fitting. No second return process.
Rent vs Buy (Quick Comparison)
| Category | Rent | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Limited tailoring tolerance | Tailored in-house to your build |
| Quality | Typically worn 2 to 20 times depending on size demand. More turnover means seam stress, fabric fatigue, and details that can be missed. Odor, stains, and wear can show up in ways you do not notice until you are under event lighting. | New garment selected for your standards and tailored to finish properly. Cleaner lines, better drape, and a garment you can maintain and re-wear. |
| Timeline | Final fittings close to event | Done in advance, controlled in-store |
| Exchanges | Warehouse dependent | Handled directly in-store |
| Stress | More moving parts, more risk | Smoother process, fewer surprises |
| Value | Pay again next time | Cost-per-wear improves immediately |

Time Has Value
Renting often requires multiple appointments, final fittings close to the event, pickups days before, and returns immediately after.
Weddings are already stressful. There is always someone arriving late, forgetting pickup, needing a last-minute exchange, or realizing the fit does not work.
If you have time to drive across the city for exchanges and returns, rental may make sense. Most of our clients do not.
In-House Tailoring Changes Everything
We measure and tailor in-house. That is rare now.
- Adjustments done on-site
- Wedding party fittings managed internally
- No driving to warehouses
- No shipping delays
- No size shortages
We control the process from start to finish.
Wedding Party Management, Where We Truly Stand Apart
This is where most retailers fall short. We operate a structured wedding party management system.
- Track each member’s measurements
- Monitor ordering status
- Coordinate fittings
- Follow up directly
- Deliver on schedule
The bride and groom are not left managing spreadsheets. We do it for you.
Optional image idea: Add a simple screenshot-style graphic here showing “Step 1: Groom consultation, Step 2: Party fittings, Step 3: Final touches.” This improves clarity and keeps people moving down the page.
When Renting Still Makes Sense
Rental may work if budget is extremely tight, it is a true one-time black-tie event, or you are comfortable with warehouse logistics.

Our Honest Recommendation
If your priority is the lowest upfront spend for one night, rent.
If your priority is fit, reliability, long-term value, reduced stress, and a sharper overall look, buy.
We have structured pricing and wedding party packages to make that decision easier than ever.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a suit?
In many cases today, purchasing is comparable in cost and provides long-term value.
How far in advance should we start?
Ideally 2 to 3 months before your wedding date.
Can groomsmen have different body types?
Yes. That is one of the strongest arguments for buying. We tailor to each build.
What if someone gains or loses weight?
Ownership allows future alterations. Rentals do not.
