The Powell has been one of Barbour's dependable cold-weather jackets for years, and the reason is fairly simple: it gives you the practicality of a proper quilted jacket without much of the bulk. The Black Powell Quilted Jacket takes the familiar Chelsea-style quilt, adds 50g wadding and a fleece lining, then cuts the whole thing closer through the body. It is warm enough to be useful when the temperature drops, but clean enough to wear to the office without looking like you came straight from the field.
The outer is 100% polyester, quilted over lightweight insulation with that warm fleece interior doing most of the heavy lifting. A two-way zip runs right through to the funnel neck, with stud fastenings at the collar when the wind picks up. The inside of the collar is corduroy lined, while synthetic leather trim around the collar and cuffs gives the otherwise technical fabric a little more character.
Modern is important with the Powell. This is a slimmer, contemporary Barbour fit, shaped closer through the body than the brand's traditional country jackets. Adjustable tabs at the back waist let you refine that shape, while the 75 cm back length keeps it comfortably below the belt without turning it into a longer coat. Take your usual menswear letter size for a trim fit. If you plan to wear a substantial sweater underneath through winter, going up one size will give you more room to layer.
Black makes the Powell particularly easy. It works over grey flannel and an oxford during the week, then just as naturally with denim, cords and a heavy knit on the weekend. Two lower pockets handle gloves and everyday essentials, while the zipped chest pocket keeps a phone or wallet secure. It is the sort of jacket you can leave by the door from October onward and find a reason to wear most days.
