Every fall someone asks us for the coat that goes over a suit on Monday and over a sweater on Saturday without looking like it is trying too hard. This is that coat. A classic lapel, a clean button front, a back vent, and a brown that reads warm rather than loud, which is a harder colour to find in a topcoat than it should be.
The cloth is a 70 percent wool blend with 10 percent cashmere, and you feel the cashmere in the hand before you see it. There is a reason the coats are good. The label started in 1984 when Uwe and Jochen Holy, the brothers who had owned Hugo Boss, bought an old coat factory in Kreuzlingen on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and built the company around it. Coats are the thing they have made the longest. The Adria is now in its fourth cut, with the pockets moved into the side seams and the cuffs finished clean, and it is fully lined in viscose so it slides on over a jacket.
The fit is regular and true to size. Take the number you wear in a sport coat and it will go over one without pulling across the back. The label inside reads the European number, so a 40R is marked 50, and the chart below carries the conversion. Sleeves have no cuff buttons, which makes shortening a simple job if you need it.
Wool and cashmere with a real lapel and a full lining at this price is why we keep bringing this one in. Wear it over the navy suit, over grey flannels and a roll neck, or over dark denim on the weekend. It does all three.
