Black and cream herringbone is about as easy as a patterned overcoat gets. It goes over a navy or charcoal suit, grey flannels and a heavy knit without clashing with any of them, and the weave gives the cloth something to look at up close. We brought this same raglan in last fall in a brown Donegal. This one is the black and cream.
The cloth is Irish. It is 100% wool, dyed, spun and woven in Donegal, and the herringbone is heavy and densely woven. New, it looks crisp and even. With wear the nap comes up and the hand softens. It is a cloth the brand has run for more than one season.
The raglan sleeve runs from the underarm straight up to the collar, so there is no set-in shoulder seam to bind when you reach or put a jacket on underneath. The collar is big and sits well flipped up. A detachable throat latch lives inside the front placket and closes the collar in wind. The length falls below the knee.
This coat is cut full, so take your usual size. Wythe's own photos show it a size larger for a looser, more draped look, so go up one only if that is what you want.
Peter Middleton started Wythe in Brooklyn in 2019 after years in fabric research at Ralph Lauren, and this coat is made in New York City. It is the one we would hand a regular who wants an overcoat to keep.
