Description

Tramarossa is not a denim brand. It is a tailoring house that happens to work in denim.

Founded in 1967 by Urbano Chemello, a tailor in Vicenza, Italy, the idea was simple and radical at the same time. Take the precision, the internal construction, and the finishing standards of Italian suiting and apply them to a pair of jeans. The name comes from the red weft thread ("trama rossa" in Italian) that Urbano wove into his original selvedge denim. It became his signature. It became the brand.

The Michelangelo is the model we recommend most often. Named for the Renaissance master, it sits in the sweet spot between a slim fit and something you can actually live in. The rise is medium-high. The leg is soft through the hip and calf with a slightly open bottom. It is not a skinny jean. It is not a relaxed jean. It is a jean that looks sharp with a sport coat and feels comfortable on a long drive.

This version is cut from Tramarossa's super stretch denim. The composition is 92% cotton, 6% elastomultiester, and 2% elastane, and the result is a fabric with genuine shape memory. It moves with you, then returns to its original silhouette. No bagging at the knees. No stretching through the seat. After a full day of wear, these look the same as they did in the morning.

What separates Tramarossa from every other premium denim brand we have looked at is the construction. Each pair goes through 70 individual steps and takes over six hours to produce by hand. There is a pre-constructed internal waistband, a sartorial detail borrowed directly from trouser making. The button is matte nickel with a knurled surface and embossed logo, finished with the same galvanic treatment used in fine jewellery. The back label is genuine suede, hot-stamped with the Tramarossa mark.

You can also have your initials engraved on a metal plate on the jean. It is a small detail, but it tells you something about how this brand thinks about its product.

The Blue Raw R-Elax wash is clean and versatile. There is depth in the colour without heavy distressing or artificial fading. It pairs as naturally with a blazer and loafers as it does with a crewneck and sneakers.

This collection is called Senza Tempo. It translates to "timeless." We think that is accurate.

Tramarossa is not widely carried in Canada. Most menswear retailers in Edmonton have never stocked it. We brought it in because it represents exactly what we look for in a brand: genuine craft, honest materials, and a product that gets better the more you wear it.
