Drake's started in 1977 making scarves and ties in London's East End, and it has spent the years since quietly becoming one of the best-made names in menswear. We carry the ties, the shirts, the Games Blazer, the denim and the boot. This page is the short guide to what each one is, where it is made, and how to choose a size. The tie is where it began
Michael Drake opened the house on Haberdasher Street, and the ties are still sewn there. Each one passes through several pairs of hands: the cloth is cut on the bias, the edges are rolled by hand, a slip stitch down the back lets the blade give when you knot it, and the lining is chosen to suit the weight of the silk. The small irregularities that come from a person doing it are the point. A Drake's tie has a soft, sculpted turn at the neck that a machine-made one does not.
We keep a working range of them on the wall. The navy tussah is raw spun silk with the slub left in, which knots softer than a formal silk. The charcoal cashmere is the one for flannel and tweed. The grenadines and the polka dots are the ones that never leave the range. They are seasonal repeats, so if the colour you want is not on the wall, ask us.

The shirt is the best-kept secret
When the house finally moved into shirts, the button-down was the first thing it made, which is sensible, since a tie wants a collar. Ours are sewn in Drake's own factory in Chard, Somerset, the works it took over in 2013 and now generally reckoned to be the last independent shirt factory in England. About forty people, single-needle seams, eighteen pieces to the pattern, and mother-of-pearl buttons whipped on by hand.
What you notice on the neck is the collar. A brushed interlining floats loose inside it instead of being glued flat, so the points roll over the button and keep rolling wash after wash. There are three on the wall: the ice blue oxford, the ecru pinpoint and the light blue chambray. For the weekend, the grey long-point check is a cotton and silk work shirt that tucks into flannels or hangs over denim. The button-downs are seasonal repeats that we reorder, so a size that is not showing online can often come in on our next regular shipment.
The Games Blazer
If Drake's has one defining garment, this is it. The Games Blazer is unstructured: no shoulder pad, the barest chest canvas, three patch pockets and a soft roll to the lapel. It wears like a cardigan and reads like a sport coat, which is why it works on a Friday over flannels and again on a Saturday over a chambray shirt and denim. It started as the jacket you wore to watch sport, and it has outlasted the sport.
This fall we have the Tweed Western in a black and white check, with a brown and green houndcheck on its way. Pair it with the Harris Tweed one-pleat games trousers, woven on the Outer Hebrides and cut in Italy, for the whole country look, or break them apart. The Tweed Games Blazer is another seasonal repeat, so ask if your size is not on the rack.

Denim cut by a tailoring house
Drake's denim is drafted with the proportions of a trouser. The rise sits a touch higher than most, with room through the thigh and a gentle taper below the knee, so a tucked oxford and a sport coat land where they should. The cloth is a 14.2 ounce selvedge woven on shuttle looms in Okayama and dyed with natural indigo, and the jeans are sewn in Portugal. The indigo rinse has been washed once to soften the hand and set the dye, and the stone wash is the same cloth further along. The welder jacket is its jacket.
The denim ages the way a good blazer does. It softens, fades along the lines of how you actually wear it, and becomes more personal the longer you own it. Under all of it, the Crosby moc toe chukka is the boot we hand people: a soft brown suede desert boot with a moccasin seam around the vamp, unlined so it moulds to the foot in a week.

Sizing Drake's
The collar-sized shirts run in Drake's own scale from 14 to 18, and the regular silhouette is true to size with room through the chest. Order your usual collar. The Drake's size guide has the measured chart for every collar. The check shirts, the knit polo and the sweats are lettered, and the merino polo runs large, so take one size down. Jackets and blazers take your sport coat chest size. Denim takes your true waist. The Crosby is listed in US sizes and runs snug: go a half size up, and since we stock whole sizes, a 9.5 takes the 10.
